We live in a world where we are more often a number than a name. A number is dehumanising. It has no personality. It is cold, indifferent, and apathetic. But our name is personal, because it was given to us by those who love us. Jesus says he knows us and calls us by name and He promises us that He will always lead us (John 10:3).
Not only the good shepherd call the name of His sheep, but the sheep knows His voice and respond to Him. The good shepherd is more than a hired hand. He does not run away. He cares for the sheep and willingly stays to defend them, for they are His. He cares for them all. He knows that sheep are defenceless creatures that cannot protect themselves. His strength and weapons are the only hope that the sheep have.
Jesus loves us, knows our names, and willingly gives Himself on our behalf (John 10:11,15). As His sheep, we ought to look to Him, Jesus Christ, our Shepherd.
